- 4 white fish fillets (cod or haddock)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup cold beer or sparkling water
- 4 large potatoes, cut into fries
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
- Gradually add beer or sparkling water to the dry mix to form a smooth batter.
- Pat fish fillets dry, then dip into the batter, coating evenly.
- Fry fish for 4-5 minutes until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
- Fry potato fries in the same oil until golden and crisp. Drain.
- Serve fish and chips immediately with tartar sauce or lemon wedges.
Notes
- Use a thermometer to maintain oil temperature.
- For extra crispiness, double-fry the potatoes.
- Replace beer with sparkling water for an alcohol-free version.
